Training course for coating inspectors – plus certification by FROSIO according to NS 476

Coating inspectors holding certificates of qualification are increasingly demanded by e.g. ship

owners, oil companies, builders of steel structures, and certification is considered essential for

personnel engaged in proper quality control in accordance with ISO 9001 – 9002 – 9003.

FROSIO (The Norwegian Professional Council for Education and Certification of Inspectors of

Surface Treatment) was established in 1986, and the Norwegian Standard NS 476 issued in 1990 and revised in 2004 charges FROSIO with the responsibility of approving course curriculums and course arrangers, as well as conducting examinations in accordance with the stipulations in NS 476, for subsequent issuance of certificates to candidates meeting the stipulations in the standard as to theoretical knowledge and experience.

The following subjects will be covered during the 80 hours training course:

  • Corrosion (types, mechanisms, cathodic protection)
  • Steel preparation (equipment, methods, standards)
  • Surface preparation (equipment, methods, standards)
  • Paint and coatings (composition, types, properties, production)
  • Ambient conditions (instrumentation, methods, limits)
  • Application (equipment, methods, techniques)
  • Documentation (procedures, specifications, standards, data sheets, reports)
  • Inspection (methodology; equipment, instrumentation, role, duties, responsibilities)
  • Surveys (failures and their causes, fact finding, legal aspects)
  • Metallic coatings (galvanization, thermal spraying, inorganic coatings)
  • Passive fire protection (types of fire, protection principles, products)
  • Calculation (both technical and economical)
  • Environment, health and safety (general principles, rules and regulations)

 

Each day of the course will be ended with assignments for self- or group-work in the evenings.

All written material will be in English. The lectures will be in English The examination will be

conducted in English.

The subjects will comprise both theoretical and practical training for the candidates. The practical part of the course will be conducted with emphasis on inspection instruments and identification of paint film defects. The lecturer(s) have more than 40 years experience from practical inspection and survey work within industries such as marine, offshore, hydrocarbon processing, hydroelectric power production etc.

Immediately upon conclusion of the training course – i.e on 24 and 25 February 2017 – an

examination of candidates for eventual certification will be conducted by FROSIO. The

examination comprise a theoretical part and a practical part – both of 4 hours duration.

The duration of the course is 80 hours conducted over nine days with a

weekend break in the middle of the course

 

 

Target group:

The course is intended for individuals already having experience within the field of surface

preparation and who are aiming at certification as inspectors. The course will give the

participants both theoretical and practical training aimed at passing the NS 476 examination.

Aim of course:

Upon conclusion of the course the participants shall be able to:

  • Read and understand specifications and procedures for protection of surfaces.
  • Know and understand the mechanisms of corrosion and recognize corrosion types.
  • Have thorough knowledge of the principles of protection through surface coatings.
  • Know and understand methods and equipment used for surface preparation as well as for application of various coating types.
  • Be familiar with and trained in the use of equipment and instruments used for inspection and quality control of coatings.
  • Know the most common testing methods and standards related to coating inspection.
  • Know the health hazards and protection equipment needed, as well as rules and regulations for safety and the considerations needed to be taken for protection of the environment.

Price:

EUR 3,330.00 course fee (including coffee breaks, lunches, the course book and the course compendium, the examination fee to FROSIO plus the cost of the presence of one censor). Costs for the participants’ travelling, accommodation and living costs apart from what is covered by the course fee are additional.

Deadline:

 Registrations must be received before 5 January 2017 at the latest.

Cancellation:

Cancellations received up to 14 days before the commencement of the course will be subject to a cancellation fee of 10% of the course cost.

Cancellations received later than 14 days but before 7 days before the commencement of the course will be subject to a cancellation fee of 50% of the course cost.

Cancellations received later than 7 days before the commencement of the course will be subject to a cancellation fee of 100% of the course cost.

The course fee incl. the fee to FROSIO must be paid before 30 January 2017 if candidates

are to be allowed to participate in the course/examination.
