Dear Professor Török We are pleased to inform you about the latest activities and upcoming events of our Federation in the European Federation of Corrosion Newsletter No 24. EUROCORR 2016

We would like to sincerely thank our French Member Society CEFRACOR, in cooperation with Chimie ParisTech, for organising a very successful EUROCORR 2016, and a beautiful dinner at the Abbaye de Valmagne. With 1147 attendees from 56 countries (including exhibitors), 537 oral presentations in up to 11 parallel sessions, 116 posters and 57 exhibitors, EUROCORR 2016 was the most successful event of the series and has surpassed even the highest expectations. These numbers again prove that EUROCORR is of the highest interest for the worldwide corrosion community and an important platform for dialogue and networking amongst all who work in corrosion science and technology. We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate both the winner of the EFC Poster Prize 2016, Ms. Elke Ludwig, TU Wien, Vienna, Austria, for the outstanding poster contribution on “Corrosion of Copper in Combination with Polymers” and the laureate of the Henri Coriou Award, Prof. David Tice, Amec Foster Wheeler, UK. Also, among WP4 (Nuclear Corrosion) the two best oral presentations were awarded to: “Using tapered specimen to study the effect of hydrogen on SCC initiation in Alloy 182 under BWR condition” by Mr. Juxing Bai (presenting author, Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland) and to “Pitting corrosion modelling by means of a stochastic cellular automata based model” by Mr. Cristian Felipe Pérez-Brokate (presenting author, CEA-SCCME, France). A comprehensive listing of all EFC Awards and Medals presented at EUROCORR 2016 is available here. Launching of the Young EFC: Young EFC is an initiative created in 2016 by the European Federation of Corrosion (EFC) to support young researchers and engineers in the field of corrosion and protection of materials. The first meeting of the Young EFC was held at EUROCORR 2016 and aroused great interest from the audience. It was attended by more than 40 participants who actively interacted with the Young EFC Board, sparking off a constructive debate about the situation of young researchers and engineers in the corrosion field. The common interest in the creation of a network of young corrosionists, and in the improvement of knowledge exchange between young corrosion researchers and senior experts, was highlighted. The main objective during the meeting was to gather information in order to design new actions to assist a young generation of corrosionists to achieve success. Supported by the EFC, EUROCORR 2017 in Prague will be the starting point for some of those activities. Do not miss the chance to contribute to EUROCORR 2017, the largest scientific corrosion event ever held in Europe! For the first time in its history, EUROCORR 2017 will be jointly held with the 20th International Corrosion Congress and the Process Safety Congress 2017. It will take place from 3-7 September 2017 in Prague, Czech Republic, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. This outstanding corrosion event will be co-organised by the Czech Association of Corrosion Engineers (AKI) and DECHEMA on behalf of the EFC, the International Corrosion Council (ICC) and the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS). The scientific programme will consist of plenary lectures by world-renowned corrosion specialists including John Scully, Ivan Cole and Tetsuo Shoji, over 20 pointed keynote lectures and about 800 oral presentations covering all aspects of corrosion science and engineering and material protection with world-wide reach. Important topics will include recent advances in corrosion prevention, corrosion monitoring, corrosion resistant materials, surface treatment and coatings, inspection and non-destructive testing, electrochemical methods, analytical techniques and microscopy, corrosion inhibitors and more. Special joint sessions and workshops in addition to the traditional EUROCORR topics:

  • Polymer and advanced materials in oil and gas production as well as refinery industry;
  • Regulation and qualification of piping systems for drinking water supply;
  • Techniques and standards for SCC testing;
  • Corrosion of steel in concrete and cathodic protection;
  • Corrosion fatigue in seawater;
  • Cathodic protection in marine environments;
  • Impact of corrosion on potable water supplies;
  • Coatings for High Temperatures;
  • 50 years of EFC WP 4 on Nuclear Corrosion;
  • Accelerated Atmospheric Corrosion Testing – The way forward;
  • Alloys for the future challenges of blue economy;
  • Non-destructive testing and corrosion monitoring for industrial applications;
  • Microscopy for understanding and preventing corrosion;
  • Corrosion in automotive: prediction and prevention;
  • Impact of testing conditions on cracking mechanisms under hydrogen charging;
  • Process safety.

For the complete listing of the topics, see: http://eurocorr.org/topics2017.html The call for papers is now open. Deadline for abstract submission: 17 January 2017 For the second time, the Federation is pleased to announce the EUROCORR Young Scientist Grant, which will be awarded at EUROCORR 2017 in Prague. The EUROCORR Young Scientist Grant is founded and presented by the EFC. Its objective is to stimulate interaction and collaboration within the international corrosion community, by providing financial support to junior corrosionists to enable them to visit and interact with other corrosionists abroad and to discuss research issues of mutual concern relevant to the field. Deadline for submission of applications: 1 March 2017. For further details, please visit the EFC website at: http://efcweb.org/EUROCORR+Young+Scientist+Grant.html We look forward to meeting you in Prague!
